Get the Look: Kristin Cavallari

This Hills and Laguna Beach star is known for being spotted on the streets wearing some of the hottest trends in the most put-together ways. We love Kristin Cavallari (who is now a mommy of two!) for her simple, classy style and the way she mixes trendy pieces with timeless pieces. She provides wearable looks that are oh-so-cute and oh-so-easy to copy! kristin-cavallari-levis

Move over, little black dress! The LWD is the hottest classic look for this summer. A white dress can be dressed up or down (just like a black dress) and can be mixed with almost any piece. We love the way Kristin wore her white maxi dress with a classic denim jacket.

Drapey pants are making a huge comeback this season. They're adorable, versatile, comfortable (perfect for summer traveling), and come in an endless array of patterns. What's not to love? Kristin dresses her drapey pants up with low heels and a casual white top which matches the pattern in her pants. We also love the idea of going all-out comfortable and pairing them with Birkenstock-style sandals (a hot summer item).

Lastly, Kristin was spotted wearing a simple, yet stunning outfit while shopping on the streets. Her distressed denim adds a casual flair to her leather shoes and black top, adding a subtle edge to her sleek look.

50th Annual ACM Awards: Our Picks For Best Dressed

reese-witherspoon_770.jpg

April 19th was a star-studded night in Arlington, TX as country superstars and celebrities gathered for the 50th annual ACM awards. The red-carpet event featured Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan as hosts, and awards were won by Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, and performances from guests such as Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley were unforgettable. However, some of our favorite looks from the glamorous evening belonged to the faces that were seen on the red-carpet, but not necessarily the stage. dierks-bentley-cassidy-black

Dierks Bentley had a successful night performing "Riser" (possibly his next single) and he also had a beautiful date, wife Cassidy Black. Cassidy rocked strappy, simple black heels which are a huge trend right now. The more simple of the heel, the better for summer. We love the intricate pattern of her dress and the flattering and unique neckline. Dierks and Cassidy win for hottest couple of the night.

olivia-culpo-white-dress-acm-awards-2015-h724

Olivia Culpo and Nick Jonas made a stunning pair. We love her entire look for its simplicity, yet Olivia was one of the more stunning appearances. Her look is proof that simplicity can be key with the right accessories, makeup and hair choices. Why was Nick Jonas (formerly from "the Jonas Brothers" and known for his pop vocals) at the ACMs? He contributed to a fun and unique twist as he performed his two hits, "Chains" and "Jealous" along country duo Dan + Shay.

troy-aikman-acm-awards-2015

Tracy Ripsin and Troy Aikman were another hot couple seen on the red carpet. We adore everything about Tracy's look, from her  blush-colored gown to her metallic beaded statement necklace to her soft curls and most importantly her radiant smile.

50th Academy Of Country Music Awards - Arrivals

Reese Witherspoon made a guest appearance on the red carpet alongside Hot Pursuit costar Sofia Vergara. Reese also chose to wear trendy, simple and strappy black heels to compliment her bold, glittery gown which we love for its cute skater-girl shape.

4 Winning Looks from the 2015 MTV Movie Awards

shailene-woodley-mtv-movie-awards-2015-06.jpg

This year's MTV Movie Awards featured a wide variety of looks. Actresses (such as Pitch Perfect 2's Rebel Wilson and Kelly Osbourne) rocked black, chic looks, while  others (such as Bella Thorne and Victoria Justice) chose bold outfits that included lots of color and pattern mixing. Here are the ensembles we consider red carpet (or in the case of these awards, blue carpet) winners. shailene-woodley-mtv-movie-awards-2015-06

Sunday night was a big night for young actress Shailene Woodley, who you may have seen in the Divergent series or The Fault in Our Stars. She started out the evening by boldly taking on the blue carpet with an interesting take on pattern mixing. Shailene's look was one of the more casual of the night, but we love how she chose to mix thin stripes with a tribal print. Also, her red lips really pop with the look and add a fun flare, which is fitting for the 23-year-old. Shailene took home the awards for best female performance for The Fault In Our Stars, in which she gave a memorable speech that brought the author of The Fault In Our Stars, John Greene, to tears.

rs_634x1024-150412160510-634.Brittany-Snow-MTV-Movie-Awards.MS.041215

Pink seemed to be a hot color at the awards, and Pitch Perfect 2's Brittany Snow brought back the popular color-blocking look in a classy and fun way. Her slicked-back hair really leaves the bright look polished and sophisticated.

The 2015 MTV Movie Awards - Arrivals

Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers Age of Ultron) was wearing one of the most trendy looks of the night with her jumpsuit, which she paired beautifully with a turquoise clutch. We love the details of her look, like the subtle cut-out neckline.

enhanced-12767-1428880727-5

Awkward actress Molly Tarlov rocked an ultra feminine, pretty, all-white dress. The shape of her dress makes it unique and we love the simplicity of her hair and subtle silver shoes. Simplicity is always in, and white is another hot color this season!

Trendy and Inspiring: Taylor Madu

unnamed.jpg

Farewell to the woman that I used to be. No more lies from the enemy. Bye-bye insecurity. Now I'm free, no more history defining who I am. In Your arms I'm clothed with strength and dignity.

These are beautiful lyrics from Taylor Madu's first single, You Are Life, which was initially released on iTunes. From this came a campaign that would find its way all over Instagram, Twitter, on black t-shirts with gold foil lettering and on baby onesies

Don't let Taylor Madu's beautiful blonde curls and sweet southern accent fool you– She is one hardcore lady with an edgy style. Her fiery, determined and fun spirit is portrayed through what she wears, and we love following her Instagram account (taylormadu) and getting inspiration on how to mix unexpected pieces. She's a new mother to a beautiful baby girl, released a single on iTunes with 100% of the proceeds being donated to Hope Mansion--a home for single mothers, and is a social media enthusiast.

taylor-easer

Recently, we talked about how to rock this spring's hottest accessory, a hat (The Accessory Every Girl Needs This Spring). It's fitting that for Easter, Madu posted this picture of her adorable wide-brim hat, round sunnies (another hot accessory for spring and summer) and a playful skirt. The look above is one of her more girly, softer looks, but she throws in a cute muscle tank to add a modern edge to this look.

unnamed-7

We also love Madu's incredible ability to rock flannels in multiple ways! Here she wears it both tied around her waist and in a jacket-style paired with distressed denim, a graphic muscle tank, killer boots and tinted aviators (trend alert).

There are a million reasons to love this powerhouse of a woman from her generous spirit to her awesome fashion sense. For more Taylor Madu-inspired looks, visit her blog here.

Celebrity Hair Inspiration for Spring 2015

7207ce03fac0e98c23ef99ff93aa22ab.jpg

Spring is in full swing and summer is just around the corner. We are turning to celebrities for the scoop on this season's hottest hair trends with an emphasis on styles that are fun, care-free and easy to manage. Last summer, we highlighted the long bob, and are happy to report that it's still trending this season. Celebrities like Lauren Conrad, Lucy Hale and Emma Roberts are all successfully rocking this look. We especially love how they tuck one side behind the ear, which adds a little edge and  shows off their statement earrings.

30ff13e13b9f6da723cb8a573c5afe9346ee4f63148c11c75c5b33d6829172097f3c27c461c8d2eb6edae282a59a1d29

Taylor Swift was recently spotted at the iHeartRadio Music Awards with a change to her long bob: thick, choppy bangs with lots of volume. Her awards for the night included Artist of the Year and Song of the Year with "Shake it Off" among others. Taylor's music and looks are adored by fans and this night was proof that she still has it.

We haven't forgotten about the long-haired beauties! For long hair, it's all about long layers and subtle ombre (aka, 'sombre'), illustrated perfectly by Minka Kelly (above). 'Sombre' is taking the trendy ombre hair color and making it more subtle and blended by adding layers to frame the face and brightening the ends with a natural color.

Sombre_Hair_Kenzas_2014_BeautieSmoothie-645x911

Kenza Zouiten is a great example of how long layers combined with subtle ombre can create a care-free, beautiful style for long hair. Bangs blow-dried away from the face matched with a deep side part can help achieve this look.

Get the Look: AnnaSophia Robb's Romper

0445f504584c2776023c714a2333b570.jpg

Soul Surfer star, 21-year-old AnnaSophia Robb took the photo above (which was published in Teen Vogue) while in Florence, Italy. This travel friendly outfit is ideal for spring break traveling and family vacations as we approach the summer months. AnnaSophia's outfit is totally adventure-worthy. With celebrities rocking rompers all over the streets as the weather gets warmer, AnnaSophia wears it best in our book. The romper is a classic piece that has a history dating back to the early 20th century, but is making a huge comeback. Rompers are cute, comfortable and provide coverage while still being cool enough for the summer, or wearable when it's colder in the evenings when paired with a cardigan. We love how AnnaSophia's romper features long sleeves and a button-up look along with a really fun pattern. AnnaSophia accessorizes her plaid romper with a neutral-colored belt, sunglasses, comfortable flats and a long gold pendant necklace. The trick to wearing a romper is choosing one with an interesting pattern or material and having fun pairing it with accessories.

Good news! You can get a look similar to AnnaSophia's, all at Forever 21, and all for under $60.

Why Kari Jobe Wins Best-Dressed for March

At Top Buttons, we are always looking to draw inspiration from women who are  smart, talented, and classy. Singer/songwriter Kari Jobe fits these descriptions perfectly. Her many roles include worship pastor at Gateway church in Texas, Dove award recipient, Grammy nominee, and recently, wife to hubby Cody Carnes. dbdd521869633d171032d2823062f90c

While Jobe is well-known for rocking neutrals, we absolutely love how she chose to add a bright pop of emerald green to her outfit. This is a great piece to draw inspiration from with St. Patrick's day just around the corner. Kari Jobe illustrates perfectly how green can be mixed with other pieces to tone down the vibrancy of the color and keep the outfit d0-able.

We love everything about this classy, cute and fun look. For this particular ensemble, Jobe chose to add classic oxford heels in a pretty mustard-color, sticking to her vintage-style roots in a subtle way. We love oxfords and their recent comeback over the past year. Choosing a pair with a heel like Kari did adds a little dressiness to her frock, leggings and casual scarf. She chooses to accessorize with bold nails and a stack of bracelets.

Kari Jobe is one lucky lady, but we adore her for being such a brilliantly talented Christian role model for girls of all ages. What's not to love?

Let us know what your favorite celebrity looks are!

A Top Buttons Intern And Rising TV Star

Taylor Murray is a bright young woman of 21 years of age. She has been with Top Buttons as a volunteer from the start and now is an intern with us. Because of her dedication to the mission of our organization and her completely contagious personality, we couldn't help but choose her to spotlight as she gets ready to finish her 4 year degree in broadcasting.  She has the dream to be in the entertainment industry and is already well on her way. As I sat down with her in a local coffee shop, she began to tell me what she sees in her future. It's hard not to be slightly envious of her stunning and unique look... Yet she is so stinking down to earth and hysterically funny, you can't help but just appreciate who she is and the love for life which she exudes so brightly.  There is no question that this girl has the grit and determination that will take her exactly where she wants to be and maybe further.

156 WEB

So Taylor, lets get started with this question.  How would YOU define your personality?

Well, I’m extremely extroverted. I get energy being around other people and making them laugh. I like being the hero that saves the day and I work well under pressure. That’s when I shine.

138 WEB

What is your personal style?

My personal style is constantly changing. In high school I was more boho/chic but as I have grown older my style has switched to shabby chic. Girly but also laid back and it can change from sophisticated to boyfriend jeans in a day.

We love how confident you are with your body.  Do you mind sharing with our followers how you got to that point?

I love that I am not a size 2. I really feel confident in my body even though it is on the curvy side. Beauty is not just characterized by one size ideal, but bodies of all shapes and sizes are beautiful. I think that women need to start loving their bodies regardless of what size they are. I'll be honest, I used to be really insecure about my weight. In high school, I struggled to feel pretty, because I didn't look like the stick thin models in magazines. Living in that kind of insecurity is exhausting. You waste so much energy thinking about what your not, when you could be loving who you are and making an impact on the world. I have made the choice to stop obsessing over looking skinnier, and have started to discover the styles that look great on my current body . On the days where I start to feel insecure again, I choose to tell myself that I am pretty. I am a curvy, bustier, fuller woman and my confidence in that is what makes me beautiful.

Where do you shop the most to find clothes that fit your body type and your style?

Since I am a fuller girl, it is very hard for me to shop at stores that are geared towards the smaller teen body type. So, I have discovered that department stores that carry a women's section tend to sell clothes that better fit my body type. I love to shop at department stores for all of my wardrobe basics, such as jeans, cardigans, simple blouses. Some of my favorites include Nordstrom Rack, JCPenny, Belk, and Khols, because they tend to provide a wide variety of sizes and fits for clothing. My style changes upon my mood and is very undefined, so when looking for statement pieces I shop at stores like Urban Outfitters, ASOS online, H&M, Francesca's, and Mod Cloth. However, to be honest, because I am Senior in college with classes and work to juggle, I rarely find time to shop. Thus, lately, Target has truly been my go to store to update my wardrobe. I can go to Target with the purpose of getting notebook paper or granola bars, and also leave with a pair of booties or a new dress. Target has also started featuring different designers and selling their clothing at a cheaper price, so I love checking out the clothing section to see whats new.

124 WEB

What has been your greatest challenge in your journey to reach your goals?

My biggest challenge has been doubting myself. I think a lot of young women have BIG dreams, but lack the faith to believe that they can actually have what they've dreamed of. I dream of being a television personality one day, but I tend to doubt if I am good enough. This is something that I am trying to change about myself. I want to be fearless and confident enough to reach high for my goals. Sometimes the end goal seems so far away, but that doesn't mean it doesn’t exist. I want to stop doubting my dreams, so I may enjoy the journey and the process of reaching them.

157 WEB

Who has been the biggest influence on your life in the past couple years? Why?

My family and friends have been the biggest influence on my life in the past couple of years. They have seen me through major insecurities and guided me towards confidence. Whenever I stop believing in myself, they are always there to cheer me on and remind me of who I am. I think it is so important to surround yourself with people who are in your corner and believe in your dreams. I can definitely say that I have the right people around me. I have best friends from childhood, high school, and college that have shared in my failure and successes. My family has put me through college and been a constant encouragement through my life. The ones I have around me are the real deal. They correct me when I'm wrong and promote me in my successes. The experience of truly being loved and cherished by my friends and family has taught me how to live my life and love others.

Are you dating?

No. I am not currently dating. My love life, or lack there of, could be a whole separate interview. I have never been in love, but look forward to the day of meeting the man that God has for me and loving him with my whole heart. God's timing is everything, so I trust Him and wait for the moment when He choses to reveal my spouse. Yes. I said spouse. At this point, I have been single for so long, I am confident that who ever I date next, I will marry. In the mean time, I take this time of singleness to discover more about who I am and what the Lord says about me. These moments of being single are precious and won't be forever, so I cherish them.

We all want to know what you are looking for in a fella! What’s your response?

Woah. Such a big question. Where do I begin?!?! I am looking for a man who loves the Lord with his whole heart. I mean really loves God. He needs to have such a strong relationship with our Father that I envy it. I want a man that is compassionate and quick to lift up the dreams of those who tend to be pushed aside. I am fiercely independent, so I want a man who can make me feel taken care of for a change. I want a man who is so confident in his calling and dreams that I feel safe to depend on him. I want a man who loves to laugh, finds joy in the simple things, and yet appreciates the extravagant things. I want a man who buys me sunflowers. Thats what I am looking for.

153 WEB

Here's a random questions for ya.  What’s your favorite film of all time?

How do I choose just one? I love Christmas and a good cry, so The Family Stone ranks rather high on my list of favorites.

And ...What’s your favorite food and how do you take your coffee?

I am the worst at choosing a favorite food, because I am a foodie who loves all of it. However, currently I love avocados. It may change tomorrow though. ;) Coffee.... medium roast, half & half, and sugar in the raw. Sometimes I opt for flavored creamer if I am feeling adventurous.

145 WEB

What job or position do you feel has prepared you the most for your future? why?

My job as a student worker for my broadcasting professor at SEU, Roxane Griner, has really prepared me for my future. It was in that job that I learned how to edit videos and use photoshop. These skills have proven to be valuable in preparing my reel for future jobs. I know that I will continue to use the skills that I learned in whatever job I find in Television. Being the former female host of Raw TV has also prepared me for my future, by allowing me to discover my love for being on television. Hosting Raw TV taught me what it looks like to be on a real life show, with deadlines, networks, and an audience to reach. No matter where TV takes me, I will always remember Raw TV as the show that sparked my dreams and started it all.  (Raw TV is a internationally broadcasted Christian talk show produced out of Southeastern University's Campus.)

Why have you dedicated so many volunteer hours and decided to intern for Top Buttons?

Dedicating time and deciding to intern for Top Buttons is a no brainer. I want to live in a world of confident young women who use their outward appearance to project the beauty that lies within. Going into the Television industry, I know for a fact that people judge you, firstly, by your outward appearance. Thus, I agree with the Top Buttons mission to encourage young women to feel good about themselves for all the right reasons.  I watch girls get attention by flaunting their bodies with zero boundaries.  I feel that every young woman should have healthy boundaries of self-expression, so that the world can see who they really are and be appreciated for more than their body.  Top Buttons also gives a platform for girls like myself to learn, grow, and share our stories with the world, because WE create the content! One of my favorite experiences working with TB was getting to help young girls who are at risk and in need of a major confidence boost by giving them quality used clothing and makeovers. So many girls feel unworthy of love and respect, but I desire to see the return of the “confident girl”, who dresses for the respect that they deserve and are valued and cherished once again by society. I believe in the message of modesty, I LOVE fashion, and know the power that us ladies have to change the world, so volunteering for Top Buttons has been a great fit for me.

160 WEB

What dreams and goals do you have in the next 5 years?

I want to be a television personality or anchor on a national TV show. Preferably, News/entertainment or on a morning show like a national level morning show such as Good Morning America or the Today show. My 15-20 year goal is to have my own show. I want my light to shine on television, that is where I get the most energy. It is my platform to have a voice.

What advice would you give to younger girls that have the same dreams to be on Television?

Don’t be ashamed of being interested in it and know that isn’t all about selfish goals and gain. There is a different way to do it, you can do it in a way to shine your light and make God’s name known. Don’t be afraid to be in the spotlight because you can make a difference in peoples lives.

This celebration brought millions of television viewers to watch this event last Wednesday night. cmt6Jennifer Nettles wore a Halston Heritage connecting pant and detailed top for the red carpet. Our favorite performance of the night was indeed her performance with John Legend accompanied by Hunter Hayes singing popular song "All of Me," with a country twist.

The Gossip Girl star topped off the dress with diamond hoop earrings and a headband, giving her a cute 60s look. Olivia1

Olivia Wilde chose to wear a beautiful black fringe LA Decades dress. This dress is unlike we have ever seen before at an event as this and we love it!

Whitney Port attended the event in a classic Dennis Basso dress. Port being a clothing designer herself, sure knew how to dress for this key event.

reese2.jpg

reese4In late April, Reese attended the 26th Annual Colleagues' Luncheon in Beverly Hills, California wearing a sleek green and blue Oscar de la Renta dress. This event was both a luncheon and fashion show benefiting the Children's Institute.  Alongside Witherspoon, the Champion of Children award was presented to Princess Charlene of Monaco with her work in charities overseas. reese5Witherspoon was also found attending the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards earlier this year in Santa Monica wearing a Giambattista Valli Couture top and skirt. Her ensemble is easily depicted as a dress until you look closer to find out it is two separate pieces! We love the different textures found in the top, and how the colors emphasize her blue eyes.

Top Button's Teen Spotlight with Scout Hunt

Scout-Hunt.png

Scout Hunt is a 14 year old photographer who is living proof that dedication and passion lead to success. Scout first made a social connection with us via Instagram and we quickly fell in love with her creative eye behind the camera lens.

The verse 1 Timothy 4:12 came to mind when we first discovered how young Scout was:

"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity."

In efforts to inspire YOU to continue doing what you love, we've conducted a brief interview with photos from Scout's portfolio.

1. What sparked your interest in photography? How old were you when you started, and did it come naturally for you? Feel free to describe any struggles or frustrations you had along the journey.

"I was in California for several weeks during the summer after seventh grade and my uncle brought his Canon camera and showed me how to use it. He let me take random photos of grass and things with his lenses and I really enjoyed it. He thought I was doing fairly well so encouraged me to continue it.

When we got back to Florida I began searching on eBay and Craigslist for a Canon DSLR that I could afford. I ended up finding his exact camera at a great price and buying it. I learned nearly everything from Pinterest articles, like how to shoot in manual mode, lighting tips, and editing tutorials. When I look back at some of my first portraits I realize how, honestly, bad they were. But at the time I was very proud of them so I did not really encounter too much frustration.

The hardest part about it was learning how to shoot in complete manual and how to edit well. But, through practice it slowly came together to produce better and better photos."

2. What kind of photography do you enjoy the most? "I mainly enjoy portraits because people can give feedback and I love the accomplishment of someone absolutely loving a photo, but I wish I was really good at landscapes because I think those are so beautiful."

3. What word of advice would you give other teenage girls towards pursuing their interests? "It's very important to pursue your interests because of where they could take you and how enjoyable it is to do something you're passionate about."

4. What do you want to be when you "grow up"? "I actually want to be a director, but always continue photography."

5. A lot of people use their hobbies to express themselves, to cope with emotions, or simply because they love the rewarding feeling of accomplishment. How do you feel when you capture a photo you really like? And what's your muse or inspiration behind photography? "Whenever I capture a photo I really like, I try to pass my excitement to the person I'm photographing because when they love the photo just as much as I do I know I accomplished my goal. My main inspiration generally comes from when I see photos other photographers have taken, then I want to capture a photo just as pretty."

6. What's your perspective on modesty? How would you define it? "I would define modesty as respecting yourself and your worth in the way that you dress and carry yourself."

7. We've recently been doing a "Good Girls Deserve Props" campaign amongst the youth, where we highlight young ladies who are doing good. In what ways would you say you and your friends are doing good? Any friends you want to give a shout out to? "My friend Hannah Williams has been volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters which is an organization that pairs  youth with 'Big Brothers" and "Big Sisters" who they can develop a one-on-one relationship with. The big siblings also tutor them, help them with homework, play games with them, or just help them out where they need it. Quite a few other friends volunteer at Parker Street Ministries where they also work with young children. Also many of my friends help out with Tennis for Tumors which raises money for brain tumor research."

As you can see, Scout not only has an eye for photography, but a mind for modesty! She took the initiative to pursue her passion for photography and through hard work and dedication, she has excelled drastically. She definitely makes our list of Good Girls who Deserve Props by promoting modesty through her photographs and by spreading love through volunteering with her friends at various organizations.

On that note, we encourage YOU to pursue your passions and spread love too!

Exclusive Interview with Young Fashion Designer Julia Chew

Julia-Chew2.jpg

A couple months ago Top Buttons had the opportunity to attend Christian Fashion Week -- a Tampa-based event whose mission is "to create a series fashion shows and events around the idea of fashion from a Christian worldview, reflecting common values such as modesty, boldness, and integrity." For a closer look on the event, visit our recap articles about day one and day two.

What was most captivating about Christian Fashion Week was seeing the exquisite designs of a 19 year old fashion designer named Julia Chew of Xiaolin. Julia's cutting-edge designs, eye-popping colors, and three dimensional textures had the whole audience charmed with delight.

In recognition of her raw talent and success at such a young age, Top Buttons thought it was fitting to capture Julia's story to empower YOU that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. We've even incorporated some of Julia's favorite photos and designs for your viewing pleasure!

1. How long have you been designing fashion and what age were you when you truly decided this was something you wanted to do with your life?

"I’ve always enjoyed sewing and art. When I was in about 1st grade I started sketching fashion designs. My grandmother sews and wanted to pass the legacy of this skill onto me.  I learned quickly and well.  Knowing how to sew my own clothes was helpful because i struggled to find clothes in stores that I liked and also fit me.  When I was 17 years old, I participated in my first runway show with 5 of my designs.  Shortly after turning 18, I participated in Christian Fashion Week.  During this time, I started talking with different boutique owners and they were interested in carrying Xiaolin garments.  I took one step at a time and viewed opportunities as open doors to keep walking through.  It has been very interesting and there are valuable lessons learned along the way.  I meet people regularly who affirm my decision to do what I am passionate about.   Often, people say they wish they had pursued what they desired when they were my age."

2. We noticed you use a lot of unconventional elements in your designs such as things like beetle wings and peacock feathers, and we LOVE IT. What inspired you to incorporate these things and what's your main source of inspiration for designing?

"My father, an outdoor enthusiast, frequently took me out hiking and camping with him. He taught me to appreciate nature, and together we collected colorful flowers, feathers, and seashells.  I would collect small objects from nature and bring them home to admire. When I find natural materials with an interesting color, shape, or texture I bring it into the sewing room and find a way to incorporate it into a fashion design. I enjoy using these materials found in nature to embellish my garments in a way that is unique. For example, many designers use sequins or jewels to add color and sparkle to a fancy dress. Instead, I use jewel beetle wings or vibrant peacock feathers."

3. It mind boggles us that you're so successful and talented at such a young age. What are some words of encouragement you would like to give to young girls that could encourage them that they can do anything they set their mind to?

"Life is like a journey through hills and valleys.  There will be mountaintop experiences and great disappointments.  I have been taught that one key to success is finding balance and being steady and consistent whether things are going great or not.  Another word of encouragement would be to keep your eyes on the big picture and not get discouraged with small disappointments.  When something goes wrong, it is easy to just want to give up.  But there is always a lesson to be learned and tucked away for future use when things don’t go “my” way.  Keep trying and little by little you will reach goals you set for yourself."

4. Do you integrate faith in God into your career and if so, what role does your faith play into your designs and your lifestyle?

"I design from a Christian worldview and strive to run my business with integrity according to Biblical principles.  Concepts of commitment, loyalty and faithfulness are important to me.  I try to see projects to completion and stay within deadlines.  I strive to be loyal to people.  I aim to be faithful to God and ask His guidance daily as I make decisions."

5. What is your favorite thing about fashion design and fashion in general? As a designer yourself, is it harder for you to buy other brands/designers?

"I view fashion as an intimate form of art. A painter hangs his masterpiece on the wall, but I get to wear my creations and share this experience with others.  Fashion is like a drama.   By putting on a certain outfit, one can be transformed into whomever they wish to be similar to an actor on a stage.  I do find myself checking the seams to see how well the garment is constructed when I go shopping.  I have appreciation for better fabrics and well-crafted garments.  That being said, I do prefer the clothes I sew for myself."

6. We know that an industry like fashion design can be competitive, so was it hard for your parents and family to support you in the beginning stages?

"I am blessed to have been placed in a family that has always supported me and my aspirations.  I still consider myself to be beginning since I am only 19 years old.  Parents and grandparents have a wealth of knowledge to share.  My grandparents own their own business and have done so for 40 years.  They have an entrepreneurial spirit and desire the younger generation to have a strong work ethic and succeed.  My parents have always encouraged me and my sisters to develop our God given talents.  I was home educated and was allowed freedom to explore areas of interest.  I am giving my best and hoping God will bless my efforts."
